Sky SOHO is a new office and retail complex in Shanghai, China with a futuristic architecture that aims to create a strong visual and programmatic identity for the complex. This identity establishes a unique destination in its own right, and is something that people will want to visit.
From the architects: The identity for this place is an exclusive programme that is consolidated in three different destinations: themed courtyards representing distinct clusters of activities, and an exceptional architecture that shapes the programme into a landmark. The building's dynamic, curvilinear form is evident in its internal spatial experiences, dramatic courtyards and flowing public spaces.
The building's envelope is made up of four elongated pieces of metal that are tied together by a sinuous retail podium. The whole envelope is wrapped in a continuous metallic ribbon. This ribbon creates a calligraphic gesture that is highly recognizable. The building's complexity is contrasted by the added complexity of squeezes that are applied to the middle area. These squeezes have the dual advantage of configuring intimate courtyards and providing dramatic and dynamic views.
