From the architect: The client hired our firm to help them renovate their next property - a Park Slope Townhouse on a narrow street. The owner had a series of requests that included opening the backyard facade to bring light into the basement and parlor floor, an entertainment rooftop, a children’s playroom, and four bedrooms.

Once the design was approved, we worked with the expeditor to get the permit process started. The process included lowering the cellar floor and working with a wall to wall metal lintel that allowed us to remove the brick facade. The structural challenge was increased by introducing a large glass window.

The way we designed this project maximized the use of the 18 foot wide block. We proposed service elements on the middle, which freed up both ends of the block for the public program. The entry level has a continuous flow from living space into kitchen, onto the garden/bbq area with a large exterior dining space. The basement has a large gym/lounge area that leads to a sunken courtyard with a hot tub, which ends with an exterior stair into the garden.

The second floor has a light wood-accented Master area, as well as the family room/home office on the lower floor, while the upper floor is for the children.

The floors in the house are made of natural oak wood, while the marble slabs were picked by the client specifically for each room. We also used wallpaper in many rooms and combined a white color palette with some different colors.
